Gandhi asked for warriors willing to die for a cause but not willing to kill for a cause. Killing oneself for peace does seem to be a contradiction. 

Many people see suicide as an act of surrender but I am not so sure. I have known suicides that were acts of power, at least they were if you believed the reasoning found in the note. 

Are the monks dying in defeat or victory? I don’t have an answer. The only answer I have is to say as loudly and as gently as I can ‘let us find another way to solve this problem’. Violence will only create more violence.
