For those who are curious the title of this blog is a direct quote of Luke 12:51 as it is found in the ‘American Standard Version’ of the Bible. The quote is (by some) attributed to Jesus, Prince of Peace! Not to worry this is not going to be ranting either against or for Jesus. Fact is I just used him to direct you to a rather common but unnoticed fact… men are not much good at creating the conditions for Peace.

Now think about what I just wrote for a minute or two. How many men of history? myth? sacred scriptures? or even good old Fairie Tales are remembered as creating conditions where Peace flourished or even started to grow? I will wager dollar bills to donuts that you find very few if any. I grant that you can find a great many that killed enough of their enemies to bring a pause in the killing. But that is not at all the same as nurturing Peace.
Alright time to think again… how many women of history? myth? sacred scriptures? or even good old Fairie Tales are remembered as creating conditions where Peace flourished or even started to grow? Same wager as before, dollars to donuts says you are finding some. Maybe not many but some. Seems to me that it is simply a fact that as a general rule women nurture Peace while men find better ways to kill their enemies.

This is not to say that there have not been some right nasty women or some truly kind and gentle men. Just that throughout recorded history there does seem to be a pattern of women = peace, men = death and destruction. I will take this argument one step further and say that Grandmothers are by and large, better than any other group at nurturing Peace.

Perhaps it is time to take seriously the advice of Archbishop Desmond Tutu who won a Nobel Peace Prize and should know a thing or two about nurturing Peace… when asked how to help World Peace he answered with “Actually, it’s very straightforward: Let women take over.”

There are only two ways to change our world, violently or by nurturing Peace. This means that there are two ways to shut down the Athabaskan Tar Sands. That there are two ways to stop the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline. And that there are two ways to stop Supertankers from destroying the west coast of Canada.

We can do it violently or we can bring in the Grandmothers?
 Your choice.
