He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
In my opinion if you fully understand and live the above you have attained enlightenment. The same has been said of the Yin and Yang symbol. I assure you I still have a way to go to before Enlightenment. From my exalted position of lowly follower of the way allow me one simple question… ‘what does it mean to do justice?
Does it mean to follow the written or oral code of your culture mindlessly?
If it does then people such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. were not doing justice.
Does it mean to live a life courageously?
History teaches that most of the people who did justice died violently. So courage does seem necessary.
Does it mean standing with the oppressed and against the oppressor?
Does it mean you, or I need to be legalistic and unbending?
Well it might if we were only given a Teaching to do justice. But we are to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our G-d.
I will consider what it means to love kindness and walk humbly in the next two Blogs.
