Astronomy suffers from ethnocentrism as much as anything does. The oldest astronomical photographic plate in Japan is dated to 1899. They were certainly using western equipment but it was also certainly very Japanese. So much for ethnocentrism.  

I am an avid amateur astronomer for many reasons one of which is the connectivity I feel to the universe when I observe the heavens. From now on I will also feel a connectivity to all of the other amateurs in all of the other cultures who also know the oneness of the heavens.
