I cannot tell you how much I looked forward to this day… the day I met my daughter. And when it finally arrived, I cannot express how much joy I felt. I had never been happier in my life. More than anything else in my father’s life, this is what he hoped for me. He used to rock his empty arms and ask me when would he have some takoja (grandchildren).
I wish he had been able to meet his beautiful grand-daughter and know that we would have future generations… Our values, our teachings and our traditions will continue on. I’ll always remember the feelings I had the day we met.
I felt the part of me that was taken away when my father left this world, returned to me when I first held Lily in my arms.
“In The Shadow of Wounded Knee” is a National Geographic Storytelling project. It is the story of Pine Ridge Indian Reserve as told by the people who live there. It is the good, the bad and the ugly of life on reserve. I wish that I could tell you that this is an isolated story but it isn’t. The stories you will find when you click on the link are stories that are found wherever people are put into Ghettos because they do not fit into the Master Races plans.
